Summary of Changes

Hello @waruqi, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request refines the symbol extraction and stripping mechanisms within Xmake, focusing on improving compatibility and correctness across different 'strip' utilities, especially 'llvm-strip', and ensuring proper handling of debug symbols on Apple platforms. It introduces specific toolset configurations for 'dsymutil' to better support debugging workflows on macOS.

Highlights

  • Enhanced Symbol Extraction Logic: The symbol extraction rule has been updated to differentiate between various 'strip' tools, specifically handling 'llvm-strip' differently on Apple platforms (macOS, iOS, watchOS) to ensure correct stripping behavior.
  • dsymutil Toolset Configuration: Explicit configuration for the 'dsymutil' tool has been added to both the Clang and LLVM toolchains when running on a macOS host. This ensures proper generation of debug symbol (dSYM) bundles for Apple targets.

Code Review

This pull request improves symbol extraction, particularly for macOS platforms. It correctly differentiates between llvm-strip and Apple's native strip to apply the correct command-line arguments. It also adds dsymutil to the clang and llvm toolchains on macOS, which is necessary for generating dSYM symbol files. The changes are logical and well-targeted. I have one minor suggestion to improve code clarity.

-- get strip
local strip = target:tool("strip")
local strip, stripname = target:tool("strip")

The variable stripname is assigned but never used. To improve code clarity and signal that the value is intentionally ignored, it's better to use an underscore _.

        local strip, _ = target:tool("strip")
