I don't know if that's still relevant but I proposed extracting the feature to @astrojs/vite-plugin-fonts since most of it is not Astro specific. We'll see.

EDIT: having a dedicated vite plugin can happen independently. I don't think it's the right move currently given all the things we have to do already
