This is a bug introduced by #984 in 3.0.1 (3.0 is fine). Steps to reproduce:

  1. Make some manual change to e.g. a theme file.
  2. Watch "there are new uncommitted changes" panel to come up.
  3. Click "Click here to show changes" link.

Nothing happens because the JSON contains __VP__ key which the client doesn't expect (introduced in #984).
