Would it be possible to download the original DNB covers?
The pattern is straightforward: On the DNB detail page, an image with &size=m in the URL is shown:
https://d-nb.info/1036130169
→ https://portal.dnb.de/opac/mvb/cover?isbn=978-3-644-02621-6&size=m
The original image can be retrieved by simply removing the size parameter:
https://portal.dnb.de/opac/mvb/cover?isbn=978-3-644-02621-6
The original images can be pretty large indeed, so it could be reasonable to shrink too large images to 1200x? pixels.
In my experience, DNB is the best resource for German book covers (the real source of the covers is the VLB, Verzeichnis Lieferbarer Bücher; which work closely together with the German publishers).
