Why?

In #2271 we are trying to ship a beta update manually. Creating this PR to merge changes from master branch manually so that it is easier to review the changes in the above mentioned PR

You will note that the changes here map to the changes in the latest GA release: https://github.com/stripe/stripe-node/releases/tag/v17.7.0
