May be worth pinging them again now that 3.9.0 is out, showing how it fails. The repo is otherwise still active. Let's go with this in the meantime. |

Since the release of xcb-proto 1.14, fixes have been added to their master branch for Python 3.9.
Nearly two months ago there was a question about when a new release would occur that included these changes, but there has been no response - https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/proto/xcbproto/-/commit/7d58eed95f796fc764741d7549ee2214bbbcc64c#note_598921
