The *BSD systems have ACL routines built-in in libc rather than
in separate libacl. Update the configure check to detect that and enable
ACL support without adding 'acl' library.

It seems reasonable. I plan to setup FreeBSD on my old desktop sometimes soon. I will give a try and merge it then. Thanks.

Unfortunately my old desktop did not work (some hardware issue) and it will take me a bit longer to set FreeBSD up so I merged it as-is. I double checked if the build is still fine with libacl on Linux at least and all good! Thanks for the PR!
