It's now possible to create "distant" backup for public cloud instances:

So the CLI should be able to do distant backup for instances :)

API:

And please note that the documentation say "backup" but in the CLI it's "snapshot", so it could be useful to have an alias "backup" for the "snapshot" subcommands.
