Windows 10 start suggestion: some entries are repeated twice #10328

@josephsl

Description

@josephsl

Hi,

The below issue has been part of Windows 10 App Essentials add-on but now it might be best to resolve it in Core:

Background:

When searching for things in Start menu on Windows 10, one can navigate through various results based on categories. When moving through categories or certain items, entries are repeated. This was the case for certain items in older feature updates but is becoming less prominent in recent updates such as Version 1903.

Steps to reproduce:

For this, NVDA must be run with add-ons disabled:

  1. Open Start menu.
  2. Search for things and use up and down arrows to navigate among results.

Actual behavior:

For some entries, items are repeated.

Expected behavior:

No repetitions.

System configuration

NVDA installed/portable/running from source:

Installed

NVDA version:

2019.3 Alpha.18874

Windows version:

Windows 10 Version 1909 (build 18363)

Name and version of other software in use when reproducing the issue:

None

Other information about your system:

None

Other questions

Does the issue still occur after restarting your PC?

Yes

Have you tried any other versions of NVDA? If so, please report their behaviors.

Yes - same with older releases such as 2018.4 and 2019.2.

Technical:

Caused by the fact that suggestion list item description is same as result name. A fix is included in Windows 10 App Essentials add-on, but until now Start menu specific workaround was employed. As of October 4th WinTenApps snapshot, a more generic fix will be included.

Thanks.
