Having small code is nice, but this was just inducing headaches. My changes shouldn't affect how the code actually performs, but now it's just easier to debug and understand. If you want it to still be "small enough to fit on in a slide presentation", get a bigger projector screen ;)
I ran the tests too and they are still passing.
