When I save files manually with Ctrl-S, Notepad++ may crash.
Chances are higher with bigger files and higher saving frequency.

Notepad shuts down or tells me, that the file was changed by another program and asks which version I want to keep, or the file is empty.

I can restore from the backup folder, but all bookmarks are lost, and the encoding has changed then.
