Simple benchmark for CodeIgniter 4 with FrankenPHP Worker Mode

Installation

  1. Download FrankenPHP v1.11.1
  2. Clone CodeIgniter 4.7
  3. Download this repo and place in app/ThirdParty/benchmark/
  4. Edit app/Config/Autoload.php and add to the $psr4 array:
    'Benchmark' => APPPATH . 'ThirdParty/benchmark/src'
  5. Setup database and add credentials in .env or app/Config/Database.php
  6. Set Cache and Session to Redis via .env or config files
  7. Run migrations:
    php spark migrate --all
  8. Run seeds:
    php spark db:seed Benchmark\\Database\\Seeds\\SampleDataSeeder
  9. Copy app/ThirdParty/benchmark/src/CaddyfileClassic to the main folder (where spark is)

Note: Code used for database part of benchmark, including migrations, seeds, models and entities was borrowed from: https://github.com/lonnieezell/forum-example

Testing

  1. Install the worker:

    php spark worker:install
  2. Start FrankenPHP in worker mode:

    frankenphp run
  3. Go to http://localhost:8080 - you should see the default CodeIgniter 4 home page.

  4. To run FrankenPHP in classic mode (used as comparison):

    frankenphp run --config CaddyfileClassic

Benchmarks

A default configuration was used with ENVIRONMENT set to production.

All benchmarks are run on macOS with an M1 chip and 16 GB of RAM.

Configuration:

  • FrankenPHP (Classic): num_threads = 16
  • FrankenPHP (Worker): worker.num = 16

Summary

Note

This section was generated by an AI model using the benchmarks described above.

Test Configuration

Benchmarks use wrk -t4 -cN -d30s (4 threads, 30 seconds duration) with two concurrency levels: 100 connections and 200 connections. This tests both moderate and higher load scenarios on macOS M1 with 16 GB RAM.

Requests per Second

Test Classic @ 100 Classic @ 200 Worker @ 100 Worker @ 200 Improvement
Static page 1,373 1,370 2,808 2,817 2.0x
Database 1,063 1,052 2,002 1,961 1.9x
Cache 1,420 1,407 2,495 2,508 1.8x
Session 709 706 2,110 2,128 3.0x
All 674 676 1,496 1,488 2.2x

Key observation: Worker mode maintains nearly identical throughput when doubling connections (100→200), while classic mode shows no improvement — it's already at capacity. Worker mode handles increased load gracefully.

Average Latency

Test Classic @ 100 Classic @ 200 Worker @ 100 Worker @ 200
Static page 72.83ms 145.34ms 35.62ms 70.85ms
Database 93.97ms 189.36ms 49.90ms 101.71ms
Cache 70.33ms 141.53ms 40.02ms 79.67ms

All 148.56ms 296.07ms 66.75ms 133.98ms

Key observation: Both modes show ~2x latency increase when doubling connections (expected queuing behavior). However, worker mode starts from a much lower baseline — roughly 50% lower latency at equivalent connection counts. Session shows the most dramatic difference: 150ms vs 47ms at 100 connections.

All Worker 65.60ms 67.14ms 69.52ms 87.72ms

Key observation: Worker mode shows remarkably tight latency distribution. The p50-to-p99 spread in worker mode is minimal (e.g., static: 35ms→50ms), while classic mode has much wider variance (e.g., session: 84ms→418ms). This means more predictable response times in worker mode.

Key observation: Under higher load, classic mode's latency variance explodes — session p99 reaches 860ms while worker mode stays at 115ms. Worker mode maintains consistent performance characteristics even when connection count doubles.

Performance Under Pressure

Scalability: Worker mode scales linearly with load. Doubling connections doubles latency but maintains throughput. Classic mode hits a ceiling — throughput stays flat while latency doubles.

Consistency: Worker mode's standard deviation is significantly lower across all tests. For example, session at 200 connections: classic stdev=278ms vs worker stdev=6.6ms. This translates to predictable user experience.

Reliability: Classic mode produced non-2xx responses in several tests:

  • Database: ~23,500 failed requests (74% failure rate)
  • Session: ~5,000 failed requests (24% failure rate)
  • All: ~12,100 failed requests (60% failure rate)

Worker mode: zero failed requests across all tests.

These failures in classic mode occur because each request requires a fresh connection to external services (database, Redis). Under load, connection limits are exhausted. Worker mode maintains persistent connections, avoiding this bottleneck entirely.

Note: The non-2xx responses in classic mode reflect connection pool exhaustion typical of per-request connection patterns. This is expected behavior, not a bug — it demonstrates why persistent connections in worker mode provide both performance and reliability benefits.

Conclusion

Worker mode delivers 2-3x throughput improvement with 50% lower latency and dramatically better consistency under load. The benefits come from two sources:

  1. Eliminated bootstrap overhead — PHP framework initialization happens once, not per-request
  2. Persistent connections — Database and Redis connections are reused across requests

The largest gains appear in session handling (3.0x) where Redis connection persistence has the most impact. Even the static page test shows 2.0x improvement from bootstrap elimination alone.

Most importantly, worker mode maintains predictable performance under pressure. While classic mode's p99 latency explodes to 860ms under load, worker mode stays at 115ms — a 7.5x improvement in worst-case response time.
