Currently, image pyramids are ingested at a resolution that subsamples only to the point that the image fits in a single tile, without subsampling from the single tile. For global mosaics, this is a local (per image) decision that impacts global performance. Simply ingesting into all lower resolution pyramid levels for each image will be reasonable in all cases and preferable for large multi-image global mosaics.
