Highlights from older versions cannot be deleted, permanently burned into the PDF #12797

Issue

I hadn't updated KOReader since probably the beginning of this year, but I just updated and noticed that the highlighting system appears to be completely redone. I appreciate the new highlighting features, but I am having several problems with them, but most seem to be minor (one being that all my previous highlights have changed to 'lighten' mode even when they were previously set to something else).

But a major issue that I am having is that all PDFs that I have used and highlighted before updating now do not let me properly delete the highlights. If I "delete" them, they get removed from the bookmarks tab, but the text still appears to be highlighted. If I try tapping on them again, there is no option to delete or edit them—they are basically "phantom highlights" that are permanently burned into the file.

It might be worth noting that I had a similar issue last year as well, but it wasn't an issue that I had very commonly, and it happened under different circumstances as well, although I can't remember exactly under which. The issue from back then seems to have since been resolved, even though the "phantom highlights" I had from last year are still burned into my PDFs even to this day. But now it's a problem again and affecting ALL of my PDFs from previous versions.

How can I get rid of these phantom highlights?
