The intent of the example is that HK_PROFILES is set only for the pre-push hook, so that e.g. mypy (which is slow) only runs on push.

If you need per-hook env, wrap steps in a custom step that sets env vars inline:

Yes, that might work as a workaround, but requires splitting up steps or redefining the same step differently multiple times.

I assume this not being implemented (yet) is an oversight, since overall the example makes sense to me.
