Walkthrough

This change revises the error message strings in the CSRF middleware by adding a "csrf:" prefix and making the descriptions more consistent and descriptive. Additionally, the CSRF token header name was updated from X-CSRF-Token to X-Csrf-Token across middleware code, tests, and documentation examples. No logic, structure, or behavior has been altered.

Changes

Cohort / File(s) Change Summary
CSRF Error Message Updates
middleware/csrf/csrf.go, middleware/csrf/extractors.go
Updated CSRF-related error message strings for token, referer, and origin validation to be more descriptive and consistently prefixed with "csrf:". No logic or functional changes.
CSRF Header Name Case Update in Tests
middleware/csrf/config_test.go, middleware/csrf/extractors_test.go
Changed the CSRF token header name from "X-CSRF-Token" to "X-Csrf-Token" in test cases. No logic or flow changes.
CSRF Header Name Case Update in Documentation
docs/middleware/csrf.md, docs/whats_new.md
Updated CSRF token header name in documentation examples from X-CSRF-Token to X-Csrf-Token for consistency with code changes.

Poem

A bunny hopped through fields of code,
Where CSRF errors once forebode.
With prefixes neat and messages clear,
The warnings now are easy to hear.
And headers changed their letter case,
To keep our tokens in their place! 🐇✨

Pull Request Overview

This PR aligns CSRF middleware error messages with documentation by adding consistent "csrf:" prefixes and improving message clarity.

  • Updates all public CSRF error variables to include "csrf:" prefix for consistency
  • Refines error message wording to be more precise (e.g., "referer not supplied" → "referer header missing")
  • Standardizes terminology for trusted origins messaging
Comments suppressed due to low confidence (2)

middleware/csrf/csrf.go:19

  • [nitpick] The error message uses 'or' which could be ambiguous. Consider using 'and is not a trusted origin' to maintain consistency with the original message structure and clarify that both conditions must fail.
ErrRefererNoMatch = errors.New("csrf: referer does not match host or trusted origins")

Code Review

This pull request updates several CSRF error messages to be more descriptive and to include a csrf: prefix for better context. The changes improve the clarity and correctness of the error strings. My review includes one comment regarding the consistency of error message formatting across the entire csrf package, suggesting that all exported errors should adopt this new, improved format for better maintainability.

  • GoFiber Default: X-Csrf-Token (mixed case, hyphenated).
  • Comparison with Other Frameworks:
    • Django: X-CSRFToken (camel case, no "Token" suffix).
    • ASP.NET Core: X-CSRF-Token (hyphenated, all caps "CSRF").
    • Express.js: X-CSRF-Token (hyphenated, all caps "CSRF").
    • Rails: X-CSRF-Token (hyphenated, all caps "CSRF").

Observation: Most frameworks use X-CSRF-Token (hyphenated, all caps "CSRF"), except Django, which omits the hyphen in "CSRFToken". GoFiber’s X-Csrf-Token is slightly inconsistent due to its mixed case (Csrf vs. CSRF).

LGTM! The docs and tests are solid and align with the X-Csrf-Token constant in csrf.go. While X-Csrf-Token doesn’t match the X-CSRF-Token used by many frameworks, changing it now would be a breaking change, and the extractor flexibility mitigates any concerns. Clear and consistent—approved.
