Dimming and TLA #8

Dear GLDF development team
At Viso Systems, we greatly appreciate your efforts to come up with a contemporary and tamper-free format.

I am little worried about dimming. Many new buildings are fitted with essentially the same general lighting luminaires all over. Consequently, practically all luminaires are constantly dimmed to the required light level. I have read through your website without finding indications of what you intend to do to fight common problems related dimming: Real energy consumption and TLA in dimmed stages.

  1. Dimming curves are essential. However, in my mind, they should be combined with information about power in dimmed stages - Wattage of course, but maybe also power factor and/or displacement factor. I guess stand-by power consumption would also fit in here.

  2. Temporal Light Artifacts. It is a fact that problems with flicker and stroboscopic effects often are much worse when dimming and especially in deep dimming. As the revised Ecodesign directive only sets dimming requirements at full load it will not be of much use in professional building. I propose that dimming curves are combined with TLA metrics.

In general, Viso Systems desires to be an early adopter and our light measurement systems will be able to supply a large proportion of all GLDF data and in an automated way. Please contact me if you have an interest in a closer cooperation.
