The part they never show you! The back! Pretty happy with the cable management.

There was enough room for this extra fan at the top, that I thought would help ventilate, but in the end it wasn't needed. (see lessons learned)

Description: I wanted to free up a tv cabinet that was previously housing my two home server NUCs, as well as consolidate my networking equipment into an organized rack. I already had the UCG Max Router and POE wifi access point (ceiling mounted), so this was a good chance to eliminate the POE injector and give me other chances to expand with POE devices in the future. This might be a bit overkill, but I'm thrilled with it.

Rack Parts List:
1x GeeekPi 8U Network Cabinet (Black is a MUST, it looks and feels so nice)
1x DIGITUS 4-Way Power Strip - 1U
1x GeeekPi 12 Port Patch Panel, 0.5U CAT6 Network Patch Panel
1x GeeekPi Vented 2U Blank Panel
5x Ercielook Cat6a Patch Cable 0.15 m
1x Unifi Switch USW-Flex-2.5G-8-POE 3B 10 inch panel rack mount

1x UCG-Ultra 10-inch rackmount panel for UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra & Max

  • I included the links specifically for these Etsy parts because they were well made and I can recommend them. They just needed a piece of rubber or felt to keep the device from sliding.

Equipment List:
1x Unifi Cloud Gateway Max (Router)
1x Unifi USW-Flex-2.5G-8-PoE (PoE 8 port switch)
1x Unifi U7-Pro-Max (not actually in the rack)
1x Beelink S12 Pro Mini Pc (Unraid + Plex server)
1x Intel NUC 10 (Ignition + Docker + Home Assistant + Game Servers)
1x Zigstar UZG-01 (zigbee router. POE powered! )

Lessons Learned:

  • This Unifi POE 2.5G switch does NOT ship with a power supply. The power supply alone is about 90 euros. Had I realized that up front, I probably would have decided I dont need it... That being said, now that I have it all set up, I'm happy with it and dont regret it.
  • I dont know why I chose this, but the first arrangement I did had the switch at the top of the rack. I quickly realized that was a mistake and the router should be on top.
  • The power brick for the Intel NUC compared to the beelink is absolutely massive. The Intel NUC also does NOT fit in a 1U space as many of the guides and rack mount solutions indicate. I had a little extra space so it didnt matter much. I also just ended up using the rpi rack mount that came with the rack as the shelf for the NUC and it looks great. I should probably find a way to secure it in place though if I ever want to move the rack and not have it fall out.
  • I was a little worried about the temp of the UCG Max, being in this new mount, but also surrounded by lots of other heat generating equipment. I found out that apparently this device HAS an internal fan, but for whatever reason never turns on. After installing a small script that modulates the fan based on cpu temp, the temps dropped from 90C to 60C in a few minutes. script: https://github.com/iceteaSA/ucg-max-fan-control
  • Routing the power is actually the trickiest part of this, and basically the 2u section at the bottom is just a big bucket for the power bricks. Having a couple of small power socket plug extenders on hand helped.

  • I bought several "BIGtec LAN Cable" from amazon , they had really high reviews, but I hated them. The sleeve was so stiff, and would kink at any bend at all. I returned them and got the Ercielook which are better. I wish I knew what the monoprice of europe is for cables.
  • For the NUC, I upgraded to a 2.5gbe usb-c ethernet port. I attached this to the top of the above shelf facing forward and it looks great and gives good access.
