This syncs up the features and behavior (at least for JSON) of this repo's HTTP API code w/ http-api-gateway at roughly this commit: 7db0cfa0605db7653ca9f1ac047967d340ff738d
Hopefully soon they will share the same code so we don't have to do too much more of this.
