Current situation

Podman was added to flatcar as an official extension (flatcar/scripts#1964), but it's not supported by toolbox. The only supported engines are docker and containerd.

Additionally, the repository contains a toolbox script for podman (rhcos-toolbox), but it's not shipped with flatcar and appears to be unmaintained.

Impact

Podman may be used as a replacement for both docker and containerd. However in such cases, the OS lacks debugging tools.

Ideal future situation

Support for podman in toolbox script.
