I use this PR for fixing up CI to a point that we can tag a release. Incremental commits are expected as I iterate over the test matrix.

The remaining problems seem to be OS specific ones, and at least a fraction of them are latex rendering related, and I see it locally, too. I haven't managed to pin-point them down, but feel that this should not be a release blocker as it's not due to a newly introduced regression and may just affect our tests rather than the functionality.
