We are not yet using value labels in Lens, but now that I am aware of the feature I'd like to try it out. I noticed issues in contrast and overlapping labels in Storybook and think that will prevent our adoption in Lens.

I would expect an option similar to the one available on the axis, showOverlappingValueLabels={false} which would cull any overlaps.

This overlapping issue appears related to issues with text overlap in general: #455
