Different approaches. Tomas' pr is about handling FatalError consistently. My PR legit changes us from a crash to 'return null'. This is a functional change in impl, along with information gathering for fixing htings. |

This changes us from a hard crash when we run into something unexpected into a soft watson where we log the information and then fallback to safe, but less fast, codepath.
