This still fails some tests locally, but I'm not sure what's due to test environment/dependencies and what's an actual issue. Can debug more next week. pytest-asyncio's latest release is not compatible with python 3.9, and I periodically get errors about some event loop internals that feel like a bug somewhere other than distributed. Basic interactive usage is fixed by this though.

TODO:

I'm out until the 18th - if people are feeling super eager feel free to pick this up/submit a new PR to supersede this. Otherwise I'll plan to pick this back up when I get back.
