Brief summary of the discussion started here:
The modality for BEP032 is to be called ephys, an abbreviation of “Electrophysiology”.
A proposal has been made to change it to something more specific.
Counterarguments to the vanilla name:
- (C1.) Other modalities which we have, i.e. EEG, can be considered subsets of electrophysiology.
There may be additional counterarguments which I can't parse properly, @dorahermes if so please feel free to list.
Arguments for sticking to the vanilla name:
- (A1) Electrophysiology is a well consolidated field which is distinct from encephalography. Point in case being that the BEP document considers the modality shorthand
ephys to be unambiguous (e.g. not Xephys)
- (A2) Rather than clarifying, an additional prefix may compromise the integrity of the modality as presently defined in BEP032.
- (A2.1) The original proposal, “Animal Electrophysiology”, while coherent with the BEP title, needlessly constrains the scope — by species, unlike any other modality. The techniques covered by the BEP have been applied in humans and ex vivo.
- (A2.2) The updated proposal, “Microelectrode Electrophysiology” uses terminology not at all present in the BEP.
