As noted here it might be nice if we had an intersphinx role specifically for the latest dev docs. This would enable something like:
:ref:`astropy-dev:some-label`
to refer to sections in https://docs.astropy.org/en/latest. Since #11342 this would be useful, e.g., for linking to pages in the developer docs from other sections of the docs, such as the installation instructions. This might find other uses as well--for example we can add documentation in maintenance branches referencing new features that will come soon in the development version.
