The fact that community members have to reverse-engineer leaked source code to diagnose bugs like this is not ideal. If issues aren't going to be fixed in a timely manner, consider open-sourcing the codebase and accepting community contributions. The code is already out there anyway. Letting the community help would be a win-win.

Could you please break this down into smaller, focused PRs? Ideally, each one should address a single concern (e.g., refactor, feature, build changes, etc.). This will make it much easier to review, test, and avoid introducing unintended issues.

The historical precedent here is hard to ignore. VSCode, TypeScript, React, Kubernetes - every major developer tool that went open-source didn't just survive it, they won because of it. The extension ecosystems, the community contributions, the goodwill - it compounds.

The competitive moat for Anthropic was never the harness code. It's the models. Claude Code without Claude's API is just a fancy shell script. Nobody is going to self-host a competing product from this. They're going to build on top of it, which means more API usage, more stickiness, more feedback on real-world agent workflows.

The leak has already done the "damage" - the code is mirrored, ported to Python, reimplemented in Rust with a clean-room defense, and has 50K+ GitHub stars across forks. The community is already reading it, learning from it, and building on it. The only question left is whether Anthropic wants to be part of that or watch from the sidelines while unofficial forks absorb the contributor energy.

The Terraform → BSL → OpenTofu story is the cautionary tale in the other direction: closing something that was already open created a fork with unstoppable momentum. Anthropic is already in the post-fork world. The upside of embracing it is enormous. The downside of continuing to close it is... what exactly?

Open-source the harness. Keep the models. Win.
