This repository hosts over 200 submitted statutory metric spreadsheets that are the result of a Freedom of Information (FoI) request made to 327 Local Planning Authorities (LPAs).
The data released is considered open to the public, as part of the The Environmental Information Regulations 2004 and is considered available for public re-use under the The Re-use of Public Sector Information Regulations.
Note that, as part of those regulations, you should not alter the original files and then re-publish them. This is also true for this data set.
This is the primary data set that powers the testing of the Open Source Biodiversity Metric.
The #BNG500 group is a collaboration of individuals with a particular interest in examining how BNG is shaping a nature-positive approach to development.
The following people contributed their time and energy in sampling 500 planning applications and their work is gratefully acknowledged:
Abby Pidgen, Anna Kogioni, Charlotte Nuttall, Elizabeth Walker, Emily Major, Emily Murray, Francis Hesketh, Gabriella Hayes, Georgia Hennessy, Harry Varlow, Helen Fearnley, James Porter, Jack Rhodes, Jeff Grant, Johanna Elvidge, Joseph Bell, Karen Lindley, Kate Long, Kate Townend, Mark Ashdown, Mike Webb, Nathan Moore, Nick Shires, Nick Sibbett, Robert Hall, Sam Arthur, Terry Smithson
We owe a huge debt to Lucy Burton for detailed data cleaning and analysis work. Angus Walker started the ball rolling by making ‘Freedom of Information’ (FoI) requests to all English LPAs, which generated a dataset of planning applications triggering BNG assessment. We are grateful to the 155 (of 327) LPAs who took the trouble to provide detailed responses.
We gratefully acknowledge the following employers who allowed their staff members time during working hours to carry out the sampling and analysis:
Arbtech, Atkins Realis, Broadfield Law, Cheviot Ecology, Defra, FPCR, Habitat Banks West Midlands, John Chambers Wildflower Seeds, Natural England, Nature Asset Management, Rolawn Group, RSPB, Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, TEP, Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment, Tyler Grange, West Midlands Combined Authority.
