<button type="button"> seems to be a better solution:

 $ret .= '<button type="button" class="btn btn-danger me-1" name="cancel" id="cancel" onClick="history.go(-1);return true;">'
        . _CANCEL . '</button>'

the problem is that a click on <button..> causes in any case also the submit event.
in reality the click on the cancel button is the same as clicking on submit button and do "history.go(-1)" after treating submit event
