Media "Uploaded To" / "Attached To" behaviour: Discussion about use cases #71076

Description

Follows #12753, related to #66663 and the idea of a new media library in phase 3 of GB (#55238):

In the existing media library, we have the concept of media being attached to or uploaded to a particular post. I.e. in the following screenshot, you can see that the first image is "Uploaded to" Sample Page, while the others are unattached:

The behaviour of attachments and their relationship to posts is partially documented in the Use image and file attachments and Media Library Screen, but I'd like to better understand how folks are using this feature in practice, to aid discussions in #66663 or for the development of a new media library.

The "Uploaded to" feature can be both useful and confusing behaviour, and isn't the same as the concept of posts that contain an image. I'm curious about the use cases this feature serves, and how folks currently use it, or how it should ideally behave.

What are the use cases you know of? (Please share here if you have or know of a workflow that depends on this feature).

Use cases raised so far include:

  • Being able to find images that haven't been included in a post yet (you've just uploaded some new images to your site, and you go to create a post or page and you only want to see these images that haven't been used yet)
  • You're editing a post or page and you want to check that you've already included a particular image, so you search for images by its Uploaded To field (i.e. set to the current post/page)
  • While editing a post, you're wanting to set a featured image from images that are already included in the post, and you'd like to only browse images that are in that post (Media Library no longer allows the ability to view images attached to post #12753 (comment))

What are some others?
