In #933 @kaspar030, @authmillenon, and I started a discussion whether to rename the functions of the ringbuffer module or not. Kaspar was in favor of dropping some functions from the public interface, too. Since in my opinion this question is unrelated to #933, I propose to continue the discussion in here.
