"today" was created for Langara College’s 2024 hackathon, where the theme revolved around the concept of "nothing." We realized that "nothing" is often a universal problem where there are moments when you simply have nothing to do. Inspired by this, we set out to build "today", a solution that transforms "nothing" into a meaningful plan.
"today" is a web-based application that helps you fill your time with engaging activities. You begin by selecting how you’re feeling, how much time you have, and your area of interest. Based on these inputs, "today" generates a personalized plan, turning empty moments into something purposeful and enjoyable.
We developed "today" primarily using React.js for the front-end and CSS for styling. Due to the time constraints, we opted to use static data sources, making it simpler for us to create a streamlined user experience within the hackathon timeframe.
As first-time hackathon participants, our biggest hurdle was the clock. In just 24 hours, we had to rapidly learn new technologies, troubleshoot complex issues, and figure out how to collaborate efficiently as a team. Balancing these challenges tested both our technical abilities and our teamwork.
Despite the pressure and steep learning curve, we successfully delivered a working prototype on time. More importantly, we’re proud of how we pushed through difficulties, stayed resilient, and supported one another. Completing our first hackathon project has left us confident and motivated.
Aside from technical skills, we gained valuable lessons in communication, cooperation, and adaptability. We learned that with determination, effective teamwork, and an open mind, we can overcome daunting challenges. The experience taught us that, truly, nothing is impossible when we give it our all.
Our current version of "Today" focuses on core functionality. In the future, we plan to enhance it with more robust features, including data expansion, user accounts, and AI Integration.
