This repository contains the documentation, code, and patterns for the outfit I created for Lunar Gala 2022(see timcode 1hr37s for outfit). The outfit features computationally generated, machine stitched embroidery unified by lines of hand embroidery. The machine stitched elements represent the generated 'cultures' on the garment. The combination of hand and machine embroidery allows for improvisational designs that flow across the garment and break the surface of the fabric in unique and experimental ways. All machine embroidered designs were generated using PEmbroider, a computational embroidery tool built by The Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry.

This project gave me a chance try experimental embroidery at a garment scale. A lot of experimentation and iteration was necessary to reach the final result. Some excerpts from the process are shown below.
The darts were marked prior to embroidery to prevent any unwanted overlap.
It took a number of iterations to settle on the standard design and flow of the embroidered designs.
The garment patterns were traced off of a TV.
- Fills - library of generative embroidered textures.
- Frame Double Layer - library of frames used for the coat and pants. Includes the additional solvent lace ring on the interior.
- Frame Single Layer - library of frames used for the black linen top. Just a zigzag stitch circle.
See the Consolidated Patterns.pdf file for the full set of garment patterns used for the top, coat, and pants. Patterns were modified from existing digital patterns purchased on Etsy, see links below for original patterns.

- PREMIER+ 2 Embroidery - Embroidery software with free version, good for viewing embroidery designs and light editing
- Embroidered Typography - A precursor project to Thread Cultures. Tested various computational embroidery textures and techniques. Much of the code used for the designs on the outfit was taken from this project.

- Lunar Gala for offering a motivation and platform for this project
- Serena Wang for being a wonderful and accommodating model
- The Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry for their generosity in offering studio space and support as well as their role in the creation of PEmbroider
