I have the same problem and cannot load European Storm footprints downloaded on Copernicus website.
After around 10minutes, I get the error message below.
I'm working on a 300go RAM machine, so it's not a memory issue.
I think it might be related to the Storm Severity Index, which is present in synthetic Storm Dataset but not in real event datasets.
Maybe there should be some try / except to add in the _read_one_nc method of from_footprints, like if ssi is not present, then set it to None.

EDIT : as mentioned by @peanutfun , it's also a matter of array size when computing Centroids.
