{"id":59229,"date":"2021-08-19T09:12:34","date_gmt":"2021-08-19T16:12:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/github.blog\/?p=59229"},"modified":"2021-08-19T09:10:22","modified_gmt":"2021-08-19T16:10:22","slug":"enhanced-support-citations-github","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/github.blog\/news-insights\/company-news\/enhanced-support-citations-github\/","title":{"rendered":"Enhanced support for citations on GitHub"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 id=\"making-it-easier-for-others-to-cite-your-work\"><a class=\"heading-link\" href=\"#making-it-easier-for-others-to-cite-your-work\">Making it easier for others to cite your work<span class=\"heading-hash pl-2 text-italic text-bold\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>GitHub now has <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.github.com\/en\/github\/creating-cloning-and-archiving-repositories\/creating-a-repository-on-github\/about-citation-files\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">built-in support<\/a> for <code><a href=\"https:\/\/citation-file-format.github.io\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CITATION.cff<\/a><\/code> files. This new feature enables academics and researchers to let people know how to correctly cite their work, especially in academic publications\/materials. Originally proposed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.software.ac.uk\/blog\/2017-12-12-standard-format-citation-files\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research software engineering community<\/a>, <code><a href=\"https:\/\/citation-file-format.github.io\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CITATION.cff<\/code><\/a> files are plain text files with human- and machine-readable citation information. When we detect a <code>CITATION.cff<\/code> file in a repository, we use this information to create convenient <a href=\"https:\/\/apastyle.apa.org\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">APA<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BibTeX\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BibTeX<\/a> style citation links that can be referenced by others.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-we-think-this-matters\"><a class=\"heading-link\" href=\"#why-we-think-this-matters\">Why we think this matters<span class=\"heading-hash pl-2 text-italic text-bold\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/covid19dashboards.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">real time dashboard<\/a>s tracking the global impact of COVID-19 to the software used to take the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/eventhorizontelescope\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first ever image of a black hole<\/a>, academics and researchers are responsible for some of the highest-impact work GitHub has the privilege of hosting.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, many researchers who devote significant time and effort producing high-quality open source software often find it hard to receive recognition for their work and suffer a career penalty within academia as a result. Yet the peer reviewed nature of open source makes it an ideal way to share research by providing example implementations, tests and datasets. The ability of researchers to be acknowledged for their open source contributions depends upon the ability of others to easily <em>cite<\/em> their work when they make use of it. We want to make these experiences easier for researchers and developers alike.<\/p>\n<h2 ><a class=\"heading-link\" href=\"#\"><a id=\"fnonereturn\">How<\/a> this works<span class=\"heading-hash pl-2 text-italic text-bold\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Under the hood, we\u2019re using the <code><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/citation-file-format\/ruby-cff\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ruby-cff<\/a><\/code> RubyGem to parse the contents of the <code>CITATION.cff<\/code> file and build a citation string that is then shown in GitHub when someone browses a repository with one of those files<sup><a href=\"#footnoteone\">1<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/github.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/GitHub-citation-demo.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 ><a class=\"heading-link\" href=\"#\">We\u2019d <a id=\"fntworeturn\">love<\/a> your feedback and help!<span class=\"heading-hash pl-2 text-italic text-bold\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Software citation in academia is still relatively new and, as such, we\u2019re expecting that some modifications and enhancements will be required as we mature this feature with the help and feedback of the research community. We\u2019ve been testing the feature with the CFF (Citation File Format) creators<sup><a href=\"#footnotetwo\">2<\/a><\/sup> and a small number of beta testers.
