The Gordon Institute for Music Learning

Empowering independent musicians through audiation.

Music Learning Theory is an explanation of how we learn when we learn music. Based on an extensive body of research and practical field testing by Edwin E. Gordon and others, Music Learning Theory focuses on the teaching of audiation, Gordon's term for hearing music in the mind with understanding. Teaching methods help music teachers establish sequential curricular objectives in accord with their own teaching styles and beliefs.

From the President

Welcome to GIML, the Gordon Institute for Music Learning! Our mission is to advance the musical thought and research of Dr. Edwin E. Gordon, founder of this organization and the coiner of the term, audiation.

Dr. Gordon’s research spread far and wide, and is the basis for curricula in general music, instrumental music, piano, choral, and early childhood music. Our faculty of researchers, scholars and teachers continue to provide world-class professional development for educators throughout the world, both in-person and online. We welcome you to attend one of our workshops to find out how teaching through audiation can be a life-changing experience for you and your students.

We encourage you to join GIML, where you will find a community of like-minded thoughtful educators who believe in the musical potential of their students. Hop on over to the join page to find out about all of the benefits you get with your membership.
