But they wanted this to display for a very specific campaign and audience only and otherwise leave the top promo bar &#8220;as is&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Since part of our onboarding includes <a href=\"https:\/\/getelevar.com\/optimization\/implement-google-optimize-shopify\/\">setting up Google Optimize on Shopify<\/a>\u00a0they were in a position to implement this in 3 easy steps.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to show you how to customize your own Shopify (or other) store via Google Optimize but the concept will work with almost any platform.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/app.monstercampaigns.com\/c\/anfxus1fqxjfnacbf9u4\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"extra-block-link\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"extra-block block-violet clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/getelevar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/cart.svg\">\n\t\t\t\t<h4>DIY eCommerce UX Audit <i class=\"fa fa-angle-right\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t<p>Download our FREE 117 point UX audit that you can apply to your own website.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t\n<h3>How Shopify Sets Marketing Source Cookies<\/h3>\n<p>You might notice analytics reports in your Shopify store that show you performance based on source (i.e. &#8220;facebook&#8221;), medium (i.e. &#8220;social), and campaign (i.e. &#8220;labor day sale&#8221;). Shopify is grabbing this by pulling from the infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/getelevar.com\/marketing\/google-campaign-url-builder-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">utm parameters<\/a> that we all love to hate (and love).<\/p>\n<p>I love them because they push valuable traffic data to Google Analytics but we hate them because they&#8217;re so darn hard to keep up with!<\/p>\n<p>Shopify does this by setting a &#8220;cookie&#8221; that stores this data during a user session.<\/p>\n<p>In the image below, you&#8217;ll see:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My initial URL has utm_source=facebook in it (landing page)<\/li>\n<li>My browser developer panel is open showing cookies on the site<\/li>\n<li>The shopify cookie for marketing sources that has utm_source=facebook as part of value.<\/li>\n<li>I click to a 2nd page that no longer has UTM parameters but my Shopify cookie still has the utm_source=facebook<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Take a look:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3212 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/getelevar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/shopify-cookie-example.gif\" alt=\"shopify-cookie-example\" width=\"1333\" height=\"845\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see how to put this into practice!<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Create First Party Cookie Target in Google Optimize<\/h3>\n<p>Inside of Google Optimize &gt; so feel free to change to utm_medium, utm_campaign, etc based on your unique needs.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Set your Test Target for Cookie Value<\/h3>\n<p>In most cases this step might be done already if you created a new first party cookie value.
