Icon Tutorial #13

It's been almost three years since I've made a tutorial! My icon-making taste has changed quite a bit since then; perhaps I can pass on some of my tips to you!

Tutorial made with GIMP; translatable; relatively simple.
Features levels, curves, and color balance.
Do NOT hotlink any images.

01) Open your image and position it/crop it to your liking.

Here we have a photo of Georgie Henley.

This is the base I created:

02) Duplicate the base and set it to screen at 20%. Merge the layers.

03) Open Levels and use the following settings:

Value -- 14, 1.10, 250

Red -- 5, 1.10, 240

Green -- 14, 0.98, 250

Blue -- 15, 1.10, 240

These can vary, so do a little experimenting.

04) Open Curves and use the following settings:

x:30 y:22

x:127 y:127

Again, experiment.

05) Open Color Balance with the following settings:

Midtones: Cyan/Red -10, Magenta/Green 3, Yellow/Blue -10

Shadows: Cyan/Red 4, Magenta/Green 2, Yellow/Blue 4

Highlights: Cyan/Red 10, Magenta/Green 4, Yellow/Blue -4

I opted for more pink, but perhaps you'd like more blue or yellow?

Say it with me: experiment.

06) I was feeling there was too much pink, so I wanted a touch of blue.

Open blue in Levels again and change 255 to 235.

Open blue and under Output Levels, change 255 to 245.

Open red and under Output Levels, change 255 to 245.

07) Open Hue-Saturation with the following settings:

Hue: -1

Lightness: -2

Saturation: 12

08) Open this texture and set it to soft light, 50%.

09) Open this texture and set it to divide, 100%.

*Please tell me if you know who made this! I'd like to give credit!

10) Open a new layer, transparent. Set it to soft light.

Using only black and white, brush certain areas of the image to make certain things stand out.
This was the effect:

I brushed white over her top to make it sparkle a bit more, and black by her elbow and a little on her face.

That's all, folks!
Remember, don't repeat it exactly -- experiment! Use it to guide you to toy with different settings.

It's only been... you know... 29 weeks since I've posted here. Sorry about that! University has pulled me away from my hobby of icon making. Recently I've been getting into it again, making icons and desktops. I've been focusing on Tron: Legacy, Tangled, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the cast of the Narnia films. I'd also like to start introducing icons with the cast/speculations of the Hunger Games and the Mortal Instruments films.

Thanks to all of you who have stuck around for so long! If there are some requests you'd like to make, feel free, but if not, expect a post from me soon! :)

FURTHERMORE: those of you who are friends with me (or I guess those who would like to be, haha), if you make icons, let me know if you'd be interested in joining Mistaken Heroes. It's overdue for a revamp, but essentially it's just a nice little place where friends of mine can post their icons. I don't have the heart to get rid of it when it can still serve its purpose, but many of us did icon making for fun and now our lives have become a bit more busy. That's life! And there are still some making icons that I love to promote.

Reflections!

It's been almost four years since I first opened up this community. It feels ridiculous that so much time has passed! And what's more, that my graphics have changed so much. I still have A LOT of work to do, and I'll be thrilled when I can step up from GIMP to Photoshop, but that won't be happening in a while, so until then, I work with what I've got. Anyhow, I just wanted to take some time to reflect on how my graphics have changed.

It's kind of funny, I remember thinking these icons where THE SHIZ when I posted them. Back in 2006. Ha.

Well lookie there! It's been 5 months since I've posted here. I guess a lot in my life has changed and icons weren't exactly a top priority. But I sat down and whipped up a few to see if I can get back into the groove of things.

And, I'm highly considering revamping GG. New layout, new profile, new header, etc.

CHRISTMAS WISHES

Christmas is coming up soon, in just a couple of weeks. That means it's time for me to accept your Christmas wishes! Icons, banners, headers and wallpapers are all welcome! Any fandom goes, but I would truly prefer a fandom that I am familiar with, as always. If you have something unknown to me, screencaps/images should be provided please. As for the number of graphics, it will depend on my creativity, but if you have a preference, just say so! All comments are screened, so if you want something personalized, ask away. If you don't specify that you want these gifts for YOU and only you, they will all be open to the public!

Also, please leave me some Santa Hat suggestions!
This won't have to be a part of your Christmas gifts if you don't want it to be!

I AM MAKING ICONS.
OMG. I know, right? Alert the media!
But really, I need a little help. I can't seem to find good Harry Potter images to use, and I could use more Narnia-related photos, too. Help me out? If you can help me find some photos from these fandoms, you can also request up to four (4) icons of miscellaneous things. It would be best if these things were something I can get my hands on, something I enjoy too. (Nowadays, the easiest is Twilight, Mortal Instruments Dream Team, stock, and random actors such as Keira Knightley, Emmy Rossum and Henry Cavill.)

Please help me out! :)

A few of you asked to see some of my photography, so I'm here to give you an idea of the things my camera (Nikon SLR D40 with D60 lenses) is capable of! I'm still new to it and not fully aware of the different tricks it has to offer. Eventually I'll get the hang of it. But until then, this is what I've got!

And uh. I'm not exactly a photographer. Just artsy, lol, so this isn't professional or anything.

I was going to post some fabulous icons earlier this week but, as my flist is aware of, I've had some major tech issues, and nearly all of my icon resources are completely wiped from my external harddrive. It's pretty depressing, even more depressing than having everything hotlinked. I'm needing a little TLC over here.

DONATE TO THE RESOURCES POT

Please, do something to make a young woman's day a bit brighter. Comment with some links to download your favorite textures and brushes, along with sites for pictures; anything from stock to my fandoms to random anything is most appreciated. You never have enough sympathy for software or material lost until it happens to you. So glance at your own resources and help a girl out, throw it all in the pot! And of course, this post is public, so while I'd rather you provide to the post, feel free to browse the comments and add to your own collections.

NOTE: I have recovered some stuff, including my hundreds of caps from The Phantom of the Opera, which I will post here when they are all up on photobucket, as well as some miscellanious stuff, but not everything is back, and after all the viruses and corrupted files have surfaced, I must expect the unexpected.

INTEREST ICONS ARE COMING.
JUST GIVE ME A LITTLE BIT OF SLACK, HERE, OK?
My classes aren't treating me well and I've had ~~a little bit of~~ drama going on, so I need that all to calm down in order to set aside some time for me to have an icon binge. Meanwhile if any of you really wanted to request something and you have some images handy, comment here and I'll probably add it to the interest icons post. 'Till then, I hope you like my new header, and I'm looking forward to getting some pics to icon!
