Liza thought she was prepared to lose her father—but coping is harder than she ever imagined
When Liza's dad finds out he has less than a year to live, he asks his family to help him make his remaining time as happy as possible. After the initial shock, twelve-year-old Liza, her three siblings, and their mother resolve to make her dad's last year wonderful—especially on Christmas, his favorite holiday.
Liza tries hard to prepare herself for living without him. But after he's gone, she finds that she is still not ready—and maybe she never will be. The family, now faced with financial problems, has to move into a smaller home, which adds to their tension and anger. As another holiday season approaches, Liza feels celebrating without her dad is disloyal, and boycotts the holiday.
Liza's search for the courage to face her grief, anger, and guilt will resonate with readers of any age who have survived the loss of a loved one.
This ebook features an illustrated personal history of Ann M. Martin, including rare images from the author's collection.

Amazingly good book on the subject

I read this book first when I was about the age of the main character, 13, and it really resonated with me. I read it again in my 30's after having lost my father, and I am again amazed at how realistic and well it is written. This is a great book on dealing with the death of a parent for teens and pre-teens to read. It does a great job of helping to understand what it is like to lose a parent, and also how much compassion and kindness can affect others. It is dated, written in 1986, but if you can look past that it is a wonderful read.

    Good book, made me cry!

This book is written by Ann M. Martin. This is the story about a young girl who must face life when her father is dying. The family tries to make his last months enjoyable. Then they deal with heartbreak after his death. The family must move and deal with the changes and the grief. There could have been more conflict in my opinion. It is a fast read and a good story but not as realistic as I thought it would be. Sure, it toys with the different emotions after a parent dies and the world crashes around you. However, it’s too simple. I think it works well for a young reader and they would appreciate the simplicity more than others. I did cry but that is just me being emotional and having dealt with someone close to me being sick and passing away. Overall it’s an okay story and written well but could be more complex.

This is an excellent book, but do not start it if you're not in a good mood. It's definitely emotional.

If you mostly know Ann M. Barton through the Baby-Sitters' Club, this will be a lot different. However, it is very good, especially for young people who may be going through the death of a parent. She does a good job of showing how people grieve differently, and how that's okay. It also just has a bunch of moments that made me teary-eyed, including one that I felt was a little gratuitous - although it helped one character learn a lesson she was going to need later, it was pretty rough on the main character. I won't lie, it made me cry.

It was about a teenager who lost her father. She was really struggling throug life without him and didn't want to be happy because she felt she didn't deserve to since her father couldn't be there.
