  I first heard of this book on one of the podcasts I listen to (I can’t for the life of me remember which one!). I then heard about it again from crime author SJI Holliday who read it and raved about it on Twitter. It was at that point I decided I needed to read it myself.

  My novel was written as a ‘pants’ book. Hannah Robbins 2 is currently being written with a plot already in place as I thought I would try it the other way around this time and see which way I preferred working. I can tell you, I’m preferring being a plotter. It is much easier to know where you’re going and no, it isn’t stunting my ‘artistic flair’. That I can use in each and every chapter I write.

  Anyway, back to the book we are talking about, or at least how it fits into writing Hannah 2 . I’m close to completing the novel and thought I’d read Take Off Your Pants to see if it could help tighten up my plan for the ending so I could write it faster. After a stressful year, I’m a little behind my own schedule so I’m feeling the pressure. Take Off Your Pants is a comprehensive book that not only shows you how to outline your novel but explains how to make it a deep, rich and cohesive experience for the reader.

  Libbie Hawker uses simple language and explains what she is telling you by showing you how it has been done in previously published books like (two very different books) Charlotte’s Web and Lolita. She takes you through character arcs, theme, and story core as well as plot and at the end she shows you one of the plans for her own novels. It looks so simple. She makes it all sound like childs play!

  When I finished reading the book I instantly started adding to the bare outline I had, fleshing out the part I had left to write in the way Hawker had explained and I’m now typing away finishing the novel.

  If you’re interested in outlining, if you’ve never done it or you’d like to look at how someone else does it and compare it to how you work and see if you can combine the two, to enhance your working life, then I’d say this is a great book to try.

  Lasst euch von dem Titel nicht irritieren (und sucht bitte nicht als Hashtag danach, vertraut mir, tut's einfach nicht), er ergibt im Englischen Sinn, da es um die sog. Plotter (also die, die outlinen) und die Pantser (die einfach drauf losschreiben, „to fly by the seat of your pants“) geht.

  Ich habe dieses Jahr für mich erkannt, dass ich ohne eine Outline keinen Roman zustande bringe, gleichzeitig macht mir das Thema eine Heidenangst – bis jetzt.

  Hawker stellt einem ein wirklich logisches und simples Konzept vor. Die Autorin bespricht jeden Schritt verständlich und mit hilfreichen Tipps, führt den Leser langsam durch den Prozess des Outlinings, das nach und nach an Schrecken verliert. Sie verspricht, dass ihre Methode für jedes Genre, jede Zielgruppe und jeden angestrebten Wordcount anwendbar ist – und dass man so einen Roman in drei Wochen schreiben kann. Sie verspricht also … verdammt viel und noch viel mehr!

  Ob das genau so hinhaut, kann ich nicht sagen, da ich noch keinen Roman nach dieser Methode geplant und geschrieben habe. Allerdings werde ich das definitiv bei meinem nächsten Projekt machen. Das Outlining ist für mich nun ein zu bewältigender Schritt des Romanschreibens. Ich muss sagen, ich freue mich sogar richtig darauf, mit dieser Methode zu arbeiten!

  Ich kann es nur jedem Schreiberling (der Englisch versteht) ans Herz legen! Es kostet etwas über drei Euro und ist schnell durchgelesen. Es kann also nicht schaden. Ich habe den Inhalt parallel zum Lesen gleich für mich (auf Deutsch) zusammengefasst, was mich etwas mehr als die von Kindle vorausgesagten knappen 2 h Lesezeit gekostet hat, aber praktisch ist. Jetzt tippe ich meine Zusammenfassung noch in ein OpenOffice-Dokument auf dem Laptop und schon habe ich meine Outlining-Vorlage + Anleitung + Tipps für jedes neue Projekt.

  Das einzige, was ich noch zusätzlich empfehlen würde, wäre eine Art Fragebogen zu jedem Charakter. Durch Hawkers Methode ermittelt man zwar die wichtigste Schwäche des MC und wie er diese im Laufe der Geschichte überkommt, allerdings hat man keine Hintergrundinfos. Ich bin ein Fan davon, einen Fragenkatalog zu jedem Charakter zu beantworten, um mir ein Bild über grundlegende Details wie Aussehen, Kleidungsstil, Alter, Geschlecht etc. bis hin zu maßgebenden Infos wie familiäre Umstände, soziale Kreise, Kindheit, Erziehung, Gewohnheiten, Ticks, Wünsche, Ängste etc. zu machen. So schafft man meiner Meinung nach dreidimensionale Charaktere – indem man sie selbst gut kennen lernt.

  (Falls ihr Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Paranormal etc.) schreibt, würde ich auch einen Fragenkatalog zum world building/setting empfehlen.)

  Also husch, husch! Holt euch das Buch.

  Ihr habt nichts zu verlieren.

  Excellent Guide to Outlining Your Novels

  I have read a few books on structuring and outlining novels and I always came away unclear on how to create a clear outline.

  Then came Take off Your Pants.

  Libbie Hawker's book is practical, clear, and oh so very helpful. I was able to outline my first novel again, and improve greatly on my character arcs.

  I love the idea of free form writing by the seat of my pants. But the outline process inspires the creative work at a higher level and then having a solid view of where the story will saves countless hours of rewriting.

  Highly recommended for writers old and new.
