John left to consult independently to broadcasters around the world before writing his first bestselling book Screw Work Let's Play and founding The Ideas Lab which has now helped thousands of people to start a business they love. Kieron Bain5 van 5 sterrenDo a job you love and never work a day in your life...
Beoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 19 september 2021What's holding you back from running the business you want to run?
John has the formula (that he has proved himself to work) to focus on your niche talents and turn them into marketing and systems that sell your excellence. People want to buy what you do best, and so often it's hard to focus on the main deal when fear enters the equation.
This book gives you a simple and effective blueprint - whilst delivering the detail and nuance to elevate the advice from the theoretical in the practical.
A must read for anyone launching their own small business, especially those who are moving from the corporate space into running their own venture.

Linz Creates5 van 5 sterrenFor those that work to their OWN set of rules..
Beoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 10 november 2020I bought this book back in September after initially being drawn to the title!
I loved it so much, and I read A LOT of business books, but this one speaks to me and I like how it's set out, especially the 10 'How to' s' which cover all the bases!
I have since gone on to do John's free 5 day challenge, and from that I've joined his Pioneer Programme and I'm now working out my own way to 'F work and let's play' 😎
288 pages of pure value, written in an informative yet fun to digest style, and John is one of my favourites now ☺

Lesley704 van 5 sterrenUseful Advice but Wordy
Beoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 8 augustus 2021Formaat: PaperbackVine-klantenrecensie van gratis productThis is a second edition (new, updated and expanded) of John Williams book Screw Work, Let's Play. It's 264 pages and although I found lots of it inspirational and thought-provoking I also found it text-heavy and a struggle to read at times. In some places I felt like we were going over the same ground and my brain was switching off. It might be better to read it one "Secret" at a time and concentrate on that rather than reading the whole book through.
The book is based around 10 steps or "Secrets" from Secret 1 - How to Work Out What You Really Really Want to Secret 10 - How to Play Your Way to the Rich Life. (I'll note here that the author does challenge you on what rich is, it's not necessarily monetary wealth.) It also looks at 21 Myths of Work including Myth 1 - If it's important you'll remember it; Myth 12 - You can't get paid for doing what you love and Myth 17 - It's safer to have a job than to be self-employed.
There were lots of things I liked about the book. The early chapters gave me some ideas and new ways of looking at things that I hadn't considered before and in that sense I found it extremely motivating. I think from about halfway through I was struggling a little bit more with the content, perhaps because that part of the book isn't relevant to me yet. But there is also a lot of writing to get through.
I think you may need to pick and choose what's relevant to you as this is a broad overview of change in general. Also, I'll note that children are not mentioned in the book and whilst I realise that family relationships are not in the book's remit, it did feel that it was speaking more to single people without children who have more freedom in how they can organise their lives. It would have been nice to have some examples from the entrepreneurs on how they slotted their families in to their change of direction or how they involved them.
Overall - if you're looking at expanding your side hustle or trying to find out what you'd really like to do - because life is short - then this is worth a read.
