Arts and crafts: water heater maintenance.

My water stinks. Its been getting worse over the past 5 years. I have been adding a touch of laundry bleach now and then but that doesn’t last and has its own problems.

The internet says the solution is to replace the anode with an aluminum one. If that’s all it takes, why does the factory keep putting in magnesium ones? Well, I tried that and it did not make any noticable improvement.

So now im trying the more expensive money back guaranteed expensive solution.

Electrified titanium rod. Easy in and out, though never as easy as it should be. The socket hole is deep and there isn’t much room. The manufacturer didnt do us any favors either by making his product a different sized socket than the standard 1 and 1%16th inches (27mm). It’s supposed to last 20 years so I can just swap it into my next water heater too.

While I’m squirreling around with the hot water off I decide to drain the tank.

But nothing comes out. The plastic valve is clogged. Why do they (AO smith) even use plastic drain valves? Anyway, I replaced the drain with a brass ball valve. These don’t get stuck. And the ball valve hasca much larger orifice to let out debris and gunk. And if this water heater fails, I can put that valve on the next one. When the plastic valve is removed a bunch of foul gunk came out. Ugh. That’s my drinking water.

While I have it empty, I decide to raise it off the floor about 6 inches. This makes working on the drain easier since the floor won’t be in the way of the hose. And you can tell I put an extension pipe on the new valve so it isn’t a Pita to attach a drain hose.

Pecker bird came by to admire my work

Since I moved the heater up, I also took care of rerouting some Pex lines.

Cost of aluminum anode: $40

Cost of electric titanium anode: $129

Cost of valves and brass: $45

All things Trump

  1. All of the prosecutions and attempted prosecutions against Trump are malicious and politically motivated. All of them. ALL. Democrats hate his guts and will do anything to punish him, even if they have to make up crimes to accuse him of. It is absurd to make the claim that “no one is above the law” and then go out and prosecute Trump for make-believe crimes, as well as using civil suits with Trump-hating judges and juries to get ridiculous monetary penalties for what should have been criminal statutes. A real civil suit would need to prove actual damages not just expect lottery-level winnings.
  2. On the issue of immunity. This is not a new topic. Courts have already weighted in on this over the past couple of centuries. The rules of simple. A president is not immune from prosecution for any CRIMES he may commit while in office. He is immune from prosecution for his official acts as president. This is an important distinction. As President, any president has a wide lattitude of what may be considered as “official acts”. The opposition party has no say in determining what may or may not full into that basket.
  3. Can a president order a SEAL team to assassinate his rival? Let’s ask Barack Obama that question since that is what he did when he ordered drone strikes onh American citizens in Iraq. The fact that those guys were not political rivals for the office of President of the USA doesn’t change the fact that Obama ordered a government agency to whack them and they were US citizens, and Obama also took credit for killing “whoever may have just had the bad luck to be standing too close” too. More importantly, the current predisent is using the FBI to politically assassinate Trump and Obama used them to spy on Trump, his political rival. Why isn’t the news media curious about that? The answer is that “journalists” are democratic party activists first and they would never ask a question to diminish the Democratic party candidate’s chances in the next election.
  4. A really don’t care about abortion. I have been listening to every possible argument that can be made on this issue since I was a child. You cannot say “my body my choice” when it comes to babies, but “take the jab or be locked up” when it comes to COVID vax. I agree that in utero concieved items are indeed human and worthy of protecting their lives. I also believe that the parents are their custodians and exercise those rights on their behalf. Not the state. Thus, a woman may kill her unborn child. Or even her 5 year old child. It hardly matters if it is through negligence or intent. The state used to have a vested interest in protecting children. They gave up that prerogative when they permitted abortion as a legalized practice at any stage of development They further gave up that prerogative when they allowed unrestricted immigration from other countries, deriving the native population of their lives, liberties, and properties for teh benefit of the foreigners. You want to kill your chirlden? Go ahead. Just don’t come crying to me when you die alone and childless.

A few words on the Epstein list.

I am getting awfully tired of news media on both sides constantly talking and promoting this story. Release the list already, then talk about it. Stop giving news air time to what might be on the list or when the list might be released. Do it first, then report on it being done.

I would say that just being on the list alone is insufficient to cast shade on the character of the person named. We should also have all the tapes and documents in the custody of the FBI released so that American voters of both parties can know if any of their candidates for public office are real scumbags. Those of us on the outside will never really know what was happening on Epstein Island (without video taped evidence, of which there are certainly hundreds of hours available in custody of the FBI).

What we do know with certainty:
1. Only one presidential candidate since Reagan made any effort at all to bring to light the vast pedophilia networks in the USA. He is the one Democrats hate so much that they want him prohibited from seeking office again. Only once candidate, once in office, followed through on a campaign to end illegal border crossing and human trafficking. Biden ended those efforts on his first day in office.
2. Every Democrat in the congress is against the Epstein tapes being released, just like they were against the J6 tapes being released.
3. High ranking democrats and their activist friends in the media said the pedophilia ring in the DC area known as “Pizzagate” was just a right wing conspiracy. Then it was found to be true. Again, no arrests or indictments made. DC prosecutors were too busy holding midwestern grandmothers without bail for trespassing.
4. Democratic party activists on the internet defend their pedo-leaders with “Trump did it too”, instead of anger at their pedo-leaders or even a mild, “we should get to the bottom of this” and calls to “release the tapes”.
5. I will say without hedging, if Trump is shown to be a pedo, he is unfit for public office and should spend the rest of his life behind bars. I doubt any of the usual suspects will say the same about Pedo-joe. Note, I don’t require absolute proof, just a reasonable certainty in my own mind. and no, insinuations and character assassinations generated by Democratic party talking points distributors are not going to be enough.

Prediction: We will not see the real list. At least not the list everyone is expecting. It will be a bunch of names no one knows and people who are only tangentially connected to epstein, not his real “customers”. So his plumber, grocery delivery guy, pool maintaner and barber will be on the list. At this point, the “list” has been in federal custody for so long that no one should trust anything on it even if it implicates the guy you personally hate the most.

Arts and Crafts: Stairs

[Pictures to post later]

There is a problem with my stairs. The stairs going into the basement are L shaped with 9 steps down the main math and 3 on the short leg. Where the stairs hit the landing at the bottom, there is a squeeze from side to side and a squeeze in headroom. The fix is to move the entire stairwell by 20 inches. This will create space to make 10 steps down the main leg and pull the landing an additional 8 inches from the wall, making it wider as well as 7 inches further from the ceiling.

There is a lot of prep work required. I had to move the main HVAC trunk line, several electrical lines going back to the breaker box, all the CAT6 home network stuff was going to a junction under the stairs and had to move. The stringers for the stairs were attached to a joist that was eaten by an infestation of carpenter ants (long since dead) so that had to be replaced with new wood.

I intended to gently remove stairs and risers to maximize re-use. I failed. Once I had destroyed about 30%, It became obvious I would need all new components anyway so that they would match.

New stair treads cost about $30 each. I decided to use 2×12 pine and cut to fit to get all new matching treads for about $6 each, stained and varnished. Risers will be made from 1×8 pine for similar savings. Primed and painted.

BEFORE:

Since I was ripping everything out anyway. I didn’t need to cut the drywall around each stair. Instead I offset the stringers by the width of a 2×4 (1.5″) to create a gap outside the width of the stair treads so that drywall and stair skirt boards could just slip into the gap. Thus reducing the meticulous cutting and greatly improving the finished look. I was able to use 1″x9″x10′ pine skirt boards and only needed to cut the ends for fit instead of cutting around each stair.

AFTER:

Note the electrical outlets spaced along the side with nightlight LEDs in them all the time so no one falls down the dark stairwell.

Next some trim. Then when the rest of the basement is finished, I will prime and paint.

A few notes on military conscription.

It’s all the rage. The Israelis are doing it. The Russians are doing it. The Ukrainians are doing it and doing it and doing it. I have even heard Americans suggest Americans do it since we are having trouble filling our ranks.

1. We are having trouble filling our ranks because fewer patriotic americans want so serve the biden administration. Drafts will fill the ranks with people who went from spite to rage against biden.

2. There are no circumstances where a free people should enslave their neighbor’s children to support the goals of a tiny few oligarchs who run the government.

3. Instead of asking how to fill the ranks, instead ask why a nation that is not at war needs so many in the ranks (2 million plus). I suspect a much smaller force would have no trouble meeting recruiting goals.

4. Since we have no intention of using our armed forces to defend our own country from foerign invasion, we should ask why de have such large forces anyway. Maybe a military the size Canada or new zealand has is plenty.

5. The time to complain about your kid getting drafted is not when the letter arrives. It is now. Current legislation should be repealed and an amendment preventing conscription of anyone for any reason be enacted. Slavery is every bit as immoral for 20 year old white kids to serve the state as it was for 30 year old black agricultural workers.

6. No president should have that much power. Not Lincoln. Not Reagan. Not Trump. And certainly not Biden and whoever is holding his leash.

7. The proper order of things is for the government to convince the people that the need is dire. Failing that, they should not be able to just “print soldiers” like they currently create money from thin air.

8. Two words… robots.

Blessed Among Men

I now own 2 Toyota 4Runners for my personal use.

I will be selling one of them, once I find a suitable buyer. I can’t just give it away. Potential buyers must be deserving.

Saturday drive: with my snake

Out driving around and this guy just climbs up my leg. No idea how he got into my car. Probably heard there were mice there. So his new home is Pennsylvania.

Shiny! New Cars

I went new car shopping today. My old 4runner has a lot of miles on it and is starting to really show it’s age. By itself, I wouldn’t care, but the number one thing I need from a car is total reliability and I am starting to lose confidence in the 4runner. I ought it new in 2003, drive it until the wheels fell off, bolted the wheels back on and drove it some more. with over 360,000 miles on it, I would like to have something a little newer with some of the modern safety features on it.

Obviously, I would only buy another 4runner.

So I went to the local stealership to see what was on the lot. last month, the lot was nearly empty. This month, there was quite a bit. Some of the vehicles still had the “market adjusted price”, which I don’t take seriously.

Some of the 4runners were 2 wheel drive. WTAF! Why on earth would anyone want a 2 wheel drive 4runner? The price difference between 4wd and 2wd is only a few thousand which is well within the variability of normal prices.

I didn’t bother getting one. Not today anyway. The salesman looked skeevy. I’m tired of buying cars from people who look like gypsies and hoodlums. Come to work like you are a pro or stay home. Or better yet, send that hot blond in the A-line skirt out to sell me something. This isn’t rocket science. Stealerships should know that salesmen should look like they are pros.

In any case, there are 5 Toyota dealerships in my area. there is plenty to choose from. I don’t need to sit in the chair and be jerked around for a few hours to wear me down.

Finally, for the first time in my life, I can pay cash.
