Flying the flag of my people*

Relax. It’s not a hate symbol. I googled it and then downloaded the version from the ADL**. They would NEVER, EVER distribute hate speech symbols. So, all good.

Anywhays, my neighbor’s house is for sale. I’m strongly considering getting one of these flags (plentiful at local vendors) and flying it prominently in front of my house. Why? Certainly not because I’m down with the cause or am supportive of any of the make-believe hate speeches that emanate from such a flag. I want to fly it as douche-bag repellent for the house across the street. No self-respecting liberal would buy a house next door to one flying “that flag”. So, the potential quality of my neighborhood is improved.

If only I had a way to make it visible only when realtors are detected nearby.

*”My People”= the ones who are not fleeing a northern state with high taxes, high corruption, high crime, and over-regulation, only to vote the same way they did before, for the same people who will over-regulate, be corrupt, raise taxes and increase crime.

** Special thanks to Google and the ADL website, without whom, distributing this image would not have been possible (as easy). I wonder if their gift shops sell full sized cloth versions.

On lockdowns, masks, and distancing

We have collectively been doing this for 5 months now. If all that stuff had any benefits at all, we should have seen all the benefits we were going to get from it. There is no point arguing over it any longer. The thing has fully run its course. Anyone who is still demanding any sort of lockdown, lockup, distancing, or masking, has something other than public health on their mind.

Arts and crafts: car maintenance.

I have been deferring car maintenance for I while and finally knocked some out.

Oil change. Check.

Tire rotation. Check.

Front CV axle replacement. Check.

Interior carpet spot cleaning. Those old spills were on my nerves, but knocking over the recycle bottle bin was the final straw. I had no idea I wasted so much beer in the bottom of those bottles I throw out. I will try to be less wasteful in the future. Check.

Next is replace the transmission fluid and filter. I have the parts and it’s an easy job. Less than 30 minutes. Problem is the job is obstructed by an exhaust pipe that looks solidly rusted into place. Loosening that could add several hours to the task and risk snapping/breaking/bending something that will mean I then have to do an expensive exhaust repair.

And I’m also still deferring replacing the valve cover seals. They are leaking on both sides. That’s probable an easier 1 hour job with low risk of something ganging agee.

And finally, I still haven’t replaced my timing belt. That includes all new belts, new pullies, idlers, coolant drain and replace, tensioner, water pump and thermostat. This is also a pretty easy job unless I can’t get the crankshaft bolt off. Then it becomes a wrestling match with me trying to gain sufficient leverage, (but not too much). I’m a little afraid to get it all disassembled and then need another part and have no way to get it. I hear parts stores deliver now. I may try that out.

KRAFT Mac and Cheese update

I contacted Kraft on line to tell them about my experience, using the website on the packaging. Rama Rengarajan assured me that no changes to the pasta had happened and blamed “something happened in shipping or starage or maybe humidity”. They are sending me coupons to compensate me.

I thank you all for the many fine recipes you sent me for mac and cheese from scratch. But the point of the previous post was to populate the internet with my experience and see if other people have had similar experiences but thought it was just the “humidity”.

I don’t see the point in the coupons. I’d have to shop at a store that accepts them, and I pretty much exclusively shop at COSTCO and McDonalds for food. And coupons are nearly impossible to give away to anyone who might use them. What’s so hard about sending me a gift card? Every retailer in America has them. Is Kraft too 1970’s to bother? I suppose I should be grateful they didn’t give me S&H Greenstamps, but it’s pretty close to the same effect.

Kraft Mac and Cheese total failure.

No. It isn’t the “Taste I Love”. The noodles taste like clay no matter how I make them. The product is not food anymore. I can’t eat more than a few bites without pitching it into the trashcan. I bought a case of it at COSTCO because I really like this stuff. What the hell happened? Are they getting their noodles from China now?

I’ve got 13 more boxes of this that I will never eat. I guess the food bank can still use it.

EDIT: Maybe I should take it back to COSTCO. Returned products become the data that companies respond to. If I dont return it, COSTCO and Kraft never find out how disgusting this product is. I mean, it’s not like anyone at Kraft eats this crap.

The Biden Campaign

It’s not enough that the national news media pretend to not notice that their party chose the oldest, whitest, goodest old boy from the patriarchy closet, they have also been diligently pretending to not notice that their old, white guy candidate of inclusion is also senile. Not just a few senior moments senile, but 3/4 of the way up the flagpole senile.

Now the national news media have something else to ignore about their chosen candidate: Not a single new idea in his head.

Look at his campaign slogan: Built Back Better.

Huh? Isn’t that just a third grader way to say “Make America Great Again”? Is Biden actually paying his campaign advisors to come up with this stuff?

It looks like he is running the same game plan that Hillary did. He is running on the promise of the Democratic party machine guaranteeing 43% of the vote, even if they run the senile old white guy, and then depend on some sort of October surprise (that started in October 2016) to push him up to 48%, which any Clinton can tell you is enough to win the Presidency.

I’m still waiting to see which ringer the Democrats throw in at the last minute to carry the banner for them when they conclude Biden is not going to get the job done. The Democrats have learned a few things from campaigning in the last few decades. First: don’t campaign at all. Just let the national news media attack the Republican candidates. There is no need to have a primary. There is no need to let your opponent know who he will be facing and do opposition research. There is no need to let the voters know who will be sitting in the Oval office after inauguration day.

Arts and Crafts: Ceiling ain’t done yet.

Still more to do. I ran some wires to where I think the kitchen lights will be, with plenty of extra wire to let me move it a couple of feet either way. Then installed the insulation.

Original insulation was R-19. I bumped that up to R-40. I used the old layer running perpendicular to the rafters and a new layer inside the rafter bays. On the ends, I used r-30, because I was limited to the space available. R-19 goes into a 6in deep cavity. R-30 fits into about a 10″ cavity. I put black plastic shells in first to ensure air movement along the roof interior.

In the last picture you can also see a new white beam, made from 2-2x8x16. Glued and screwed together for added strength. They will take the place of the supporting wall just behind it and the ceiling will be cathedraled after that with R-30 insulation. The vertical walls are getting improved from R-11 to R-15 in most places and bumping the wall thickness to 6″ from 4″. The R-11 insulation I remove is getting salvaged and put in the garage/workshop attic, which is currently around R-2 (if that). The blown in insulation there is so thin that the drywall is visible in most of the garage attic.

Next: God knows what. Likely removing the 2×6 rafters in the “dining room” to permit cathedralizing the ceiling there, then installing the r-30 insulation in that part.

Alternative: recounting the bathroom doors: originally 36″ wide doors. But there just insnt room for them to open all the way without striking the opposite wall. So. Reduce to 32″ door. RIP out frames, drywall, install new frame, new drywall, paint, trim, alignment. (Sigh).

Game review: Farcry5

I bought this on sale at Steam. A nice first person shooter game with lots of cool features. Great graphics. Great story.

There are games within the game. Get tired of killing bad guys? Go fishing. Get tired of that, visit the arcade and play the at arcade games.

Best extra NPC companion character? Cheeseburger the bear. His special power is the right to “Bear arms” and he will exercise his right to kill. Hahaha.

Ending: total crap ending. Just skip it. Declare game over when the final boss issues his challenge. Three possible endings, all bad. Two nuke endings, not much difference, and the third ending is deciding to not play after only ten minutes into the game. WTF? why would any sane person buy a game where the best ending was achieved by not playing?

In game economics: stores in various locations offer stuff. None of which are useful. Ammo and weapons on the hoof are plentiful. You can literally never buy anything at the store and do just fine.

Aircraft: the airplanes are for the most part, unflyable. The ASDW key commands are too extreme to control airplane movements. No joystick support. Does support game control devices (whatever those are called), so the mini joysticks on those might be useful. Oddly enough, the helicopters are super easy to control.

Garages, docks, and airfields let you buy cars, trucks, boats and aircraft. But you NEVER need too since there are plenty of them scattered around you can take for free. Need a ride? Just shoot the driver of any passing vehicle and take it. (Freindly, enemy, neutral, it’s all the same)

The ending sucks monkey balls. Dont even bother. You spend 5-6 days playing and having fun only to be presented with the choices: kill all your allies or let the wookie win. No matter which you choose, a nuke STILL drops on your head and the bad guy wins.

Unexpected high cost of COVID

I’m doing a lot of projects around the house. It’s time to put in the deck. I get a handyman to do the labor (young guys work) and head to Lowes for supplies.

….

Nothing. The shelves are bare of pressure treated lumber. (What decks are made of).

It seems everyone else is taking advantage of the “working from home” and putting in decks too. Lowes claims the are three months ahead of their sales targets and can’t say when they will ever get any more. They won’t even take orders and deliver it as it comes in. It’s like the permanent .22LR shortage that hit when Obama got elected.

Arts and Crafts: ceiling rafters done

I finished moving the rafters up. So I thought I would let you all gawk at the pictures, even those spammers who still think it’s the 90’s and trying to drive blog traffic to their essential oils, health supplements, and magic prayers businesses.

First, I got all the rafters above the old support beam. Making it pointless. Then removed it in sections.

A big project. I’m glad it’s done. Stuff some insulation in and close it up with vapor barrier plastic sheet. Then layout the kitchen.

Edit: I’m not really done. I still have to reinstall the knee wall in that side of the attic.
