Mexico

Last Friday, the USMNT took on Mexico on their home turf. The U.S. had been unbeaten at home during World Cup Qualifiers since 2001. Even more impressive, they hadn’t lost a home a home World Cup Qualifier against Mexico since 1972. Unfortunately, the “dos a cero” chant that had been used the last four outings against their opponent would come to an end. After a 15 year streak of beating Mexico 2-0 during their World Cup Qualifiers, the United States would finally lose 2-1. And so the “dos a uno” chants begin.

Although the streak against CONCACAF rivals Mexico had been broken, there are positive takeaways from Friday’s match. Firstly, 18-year-old Christian Pulisic started in a center attacking midfield role, which is different from the wing position we have seen him in. Also, getting a start against a rival side during a crucial match had to boost his confidence. His energy bursts and attacking skills showed promise in his game. It may sound crazy, but the teenager may be our most dangerous attacker, if not our best player.

Another key starter was Bobby Wood. As Jurgen Klinsmann seems to be searching for a reliable striking pair, Bobby Wood seems to have locked down one of the spots. The 23-year-old was paired with veteran Jozy Altidore. Altidore’s time has been very sporadic with the USMNT due to his shaky form. However, the 27-year-old set up a beautiful team goal when he turned his Mexican defender, and slotted a through ball to Wood who casually finished it past the keeper. There were spurts of the two connecting and being on the same page throughout the game, but nothing compared to the sequence that lead to the goal. Unfortunately they could only net one for the U.S. But, Bobby Wood proved why he is Klinsmann’s first choice striker with his strength, pace, and goal scoring ability displayed on Friday.
