The Freedom Index tracks federal and state House and Senate votes so you can see your legislators' voting records.

Note: State tracking began in 2022. While it does not provide a lot of history yet, it will prove to be an indispensable reference over time.

Our mobile web app can be installed on any mobile phone or tablet to provide quick access to the Freedom Index.

Each vote includes a brief statement explaining why it is not only constitutional or unconstitutional, but "pro-freedom" or "anti-freedom." It is often challenging to discern what position to take due to the corrupt deal-making and compromises that pack legislation with special interests. Our team sorts through the legislation and identifies key points to evaluate, and then showcases that analysis for you. Learn more about the methodology we use.

The Freedom Index is a nonpartisan educational effort of The John Birch Society. You can sign up to receive Legislative Alerts and help push back against big government's constant assault on your individual rights and freedoms.

About the Freedom Index

The nonpartisan Freedom Index rates members of Congress and state legislators based on their adherence to constitutional principles—limited government, fiscal responsibility, national and state sovereignty, and a traditional foreign policy of avoiding foreign entanglements—showing citizens how their elected officials are voting without promoting any candidate or political party.

Decades of Accountability

Our first scorecard, The Conservative Index, was published in The New American magazine in 1971. In 2007, this vote accountability report became The Freedom Index. It is thoughtfully produced twice per year by The New American staff. We launched TheFreedomIndex.org in 2022, expanding our coverage to include state legislators. FreedomIndex.us was launched in February 2026 when we added powerful features to help our users make a greater impact.

We've been helping citizens like you hold lawmakers accountable for their votes for decades.

TheNewAmerican.com
It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brush fires of freedom in the minds of men.
