H<\/span>ere’s a piece of good news\u00a0for both Microsoft and Python fans. Now Windows users can download Python from the Microsoft Store.<\/p>\n

Hopefully, this will pave the way to removal of dependency on the Windows Installer (.MSI) packages that gets\u00a0compiled by\u00a0the CPython team every year.<\/p>\n

Python 3.7 on MS Store<\/h2>\n

For those who aren’t familiar, Windows doesn’t offer a\u00a0native installation of Python like\u00a0most of\u00a0Linux and Unix systems.\u00a0This\u00a0is why users need to make do with\u00a0CPython’s\u00a0compiled Windows installers.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, the\u00a0team has released an official\u00a0Python package on Microsoft Store<\/a>. But hold your horses because it has its\u00a0own\u00a0drawbacks.<\/p>\n

Firstly, this Microsoft Store version is a simple\u00a0installation of\u00a0Python<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0which is suitable for running scripts, packages and using IDLE or other development environments.<\/p>\n

Secondly, the restrictions on Microsoft Store apps inhibit Python scripts from gaining full write access to shared locations such as TEMP and the registry.<\/p>\n

Therefore, the Microsoft\u00a0Store version of Python you’d download will either write to a private copy. So, you can choose to install the full installer from Python\u2019s website.<\/p>\n

Another well-known issue with the py.exe launcher is that it cannot be used to launch Python if you install it from the Microsoft Store.<\/p>\n

Because of the\u00a0above-mentioned\u00a0reasons, this package\u00a0is currently considered\u00a0an “evaluation” release\u00a0and\u00a0therefore not all features are guaranteed to be stable.<\/p>\n

But all isn’t lost, as\u00a0Python 3.7 on MS\u00a0Store brings numerous useful tools for the Windows 10 environment. You can choose to launch Python from Start Menu\/Command Prompt\/PowerShell sessions with a Python argument.<\/p>\n

Even though it is still recommended to install\u00a0the full version of Python, this development is\u00a0interesting\u00a0nonetheless. And, we would\u00a0really\u00a0like to see the full\u00a0version\u00a0of Python on the Microsoft Store, minus the current restrictions.<\/p>\n
