Hi Everyone, I am looking for some tips for midi randomization, especially of things like note length, CC, velocity etc. Any other tools other than Jitterbox? Other approaches I should consider?

I have a general case use of making some long, evolving orchestral textural instruments (think Arkhis) out of my own orchestral plugins, but my approach is variable-- sometimes using BlueArp as a trigger, sometimes using textural instruments themselves with pan and volume automation (no problem there). I am playing around with using midi files as well (note or CC triggering).

One more specific example would be to randomize incoming midi note-on triggers, either via BlueArp or midi files. Another would be to randomize triggers for different articulations via CC.

Would love to hear how you do randomization in Unify! Thanks in advance,

Paul

The now-ancient (but still free) PizMidi Collection of VST MIDI-effect plug-ins has some useful randomization capabilities. Latest download links:

If you're on a Mac, get the Windows download as well, because it includes the original documentation in plain-text and PDF. Unzip and make a new a folder called "PizMidi" (or whatever) containing all these VSTs, and put this in your main VST folder. Drag-drop the PizMidi folder into Unify's Known Plug-Ins List view to register them all.

These VSTs don't have their own GUIs, so they'll appear as just a list of labeled sliders in Unify. Read the docs to understand what each parameter does.

These VSTs can be used in any MIDI-effect slot in Unify, or in ComboBox instances if you want to experiment with more elaborate routing.

@getdunne Thank you so much. Care to share any tips on which modules or chains of modules are particularly helpful?

I don't use randomization myself, so I have no insights to share. To save you a bit of time, the doc files for the following PizMidi plug-ins include the word "random":

  • midiCCModulator
  • midiChordSplit
  • midiPolyphony
  • midiProbability
  • midiSimpleLFO
  • midiStrum
  • midiSwing

Grooveliner - BASQAUDIO - this is an excellent piano roll VST and standalone app with lots of randomisation features - great for use in Unify. I'm not affiliated with the developer at all but find the VST really useful.
