We’ve rolled out Two-Factor Authentication for Vivaldi accounts and a new reputation system for Vivaldi Webmail access.

I would be more than happy if I could at least do verification via phone number + identity verification like Passport/ID card rather than waiting and using Vivaldi services for a while just to be able to get webmail access. Is there any other way how can I get access quickly with webmail without going with reputation system. Thanks!
-
@harcorutgers If you use a local calendar, it will be local. Nothing is synced. Even if you had a Vivaldi webmail account, your local Vivaldi calendar would not be synced. You need some kind of server for syncing with CalDAV capabilites, for instance an online account from a third party, or perhaps even your own calendar server. Then add this server as calendar account in Vivaldi calendar settings.
-
@luetage Thank you for the quick reply. I was reading this and assumed a CalDAV calendar came with the Vivaldi account: https://help.vivaldi.com/services/webmail/web-calendar/
But this is not the case?
-
@harcorutgers You can use any calendar account (server) with CalDAV with the Vivaldi browser calendar client. Therefore syncing capability is built in, but you need to provide access to the server by adding a calendar account. With access to Vivaldi webmail this can be your Vivaldi account, without access you need to provide your own. The explanations in Vivaldi help are correct.
-
@luetage Thank you, this should be the functionality I need. I'll just wait for enough reputation points to see if it works as I hope it will

-
Apparently, you just use sync and wait.
Which is a total lie since I've been using sync and as of tomorrow, a year without webmail access.
And if you mail the support team you just get the "get more rep" boilie plate answer.
-
@Lunarie That's not what it says at all.
"This means that new users will not be able to use Vivaldi Webmail immediately after creating the account. They’ll have to participate in Forum discussions, interact with others on Vivaldi Social, share their browser themes, post on their blog and/or sync their browser data to collect “points”."
https://vivaldi.com/blog/community/two-factor-authentication-for-vivaldi-accounts/#Vivaldi_Webmail_access_is_now_linked_to_a_reputation_systemIt's regrettable they have had to resort to this. I think they were too optimistic and underestimated the resources required to run a mail service these days, with spammers wreaking havoc and resulting in mail from small providers being blacklisted.
Of course, the big ones like Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail/Live don't care and do absolutely nothing to stop spammers using their services, because no-one will dare blacklist them.
Personally I don't see what's so enticing about getting access to "webmail" in any case. All you get is an
@vivaldi.netaddress and access to a pretty basic webmail client (RoundCube), and 10GB of storage. Enough for most basic needs, but not for a professional mail account receiving lots of email. If people think Vivaldi's "webmail" can in any way be compared to features from dedicated mail providers like Gmail, ProtonMail or Tutanota they will be disappointed.
There's plenty of free, privacy-oriented and European mail providers, including ProtonMail, Tutanota and many more:

https://www.goeuropean.org/outlook-and-gmail-alternativesI'm also sure there's plenty of Asian and African alternatives.

I argue that the vetting process for Vivaldi webmail is something special, because it is unique, not what everybody else does. And gives me peace of mind the people using Vivaldi webmail should not abuse it. We all have multiple email accounts for different uses, such as personal private, for stuff like newsletters and mailing lists, and then encrypted inbox for health and finance and legal matters, for example. Each of these can not be compared with the others.
In fact, the sign-up page for Vivaldi webmail gives you an option if you want more features than what Vivaldi provides. Because whether it’s webmail, or the blogs, or the social platform, it’s all about marketing Vivaldi and us being in community. Like a sports team, y’all know what the rule book says, and working together for one mission.

Hmm, it's been 4 days now and I must say it's hard not to get impatient
I use browser sync and participate in the forum and got 4 reputation points so far, but no access to Vivaldi webmail (and more important the CalDAV calendar account that comes with it).I already have several Mastodon (and other fediverse) accounts and it feels stupid to have to make another account on Vivaldi Social just to score points. I'm not into making browser themes so can't share those. And I have no need for another blog. So most of the ways to collect more 'reputation points' are not for me.
I would however like to use the CalDAV calendar account that apparently comes with access to Vivaldi webmail, so I can start syncing the Vivaldi calendar instead of the Google calendar. It's a shame that there is no way for me to use this now, while for me it feels like this functionality is an essential part of the Vivaldi calendar.
I understand the need for this reputation process and think it is a smart move, but without any indication as to how long it might take it's also very discouraging for new Vivaldi (calendar) users. I'm not sure if that's what's intended here?

Yes, email and calendar are activated simultaneously. Unfortunately, this is Vivaldi's choice, its administrative policy. Perhaps not the best one. All you can do in this situation is use Vivaldi's services and wait. A week or a month — who knows?
IMHO, it's been N years already, and there have been many complaints from newbies... from honest newbies about this verification method. Maybe it's time to come up with and add an alternative method?
-
@far4 Well that's a surprise, I suddenly just magically got webmail access, and more importantly: a CalDAV calendar I can sync. It works! Bit of a mysterie what triggered this access, because I don't see any extra reputation points, but very happy nonetheless

Now to move all my google calendars here, so I'm one step closer in ditching google alltogether.

I have establish for two factor authentication in Aegis. Only the rest of reputation system is waiting, for access the mail system.

Still waiting patiently for webmail access
