Things I Have Learned

Updating from afar, six days into our trip. While nothing too exciting has happened, nobody else seems to be doing entries, so I assume that it must be because everyone loves me so much that they couldn't possibly do an entry if they thought I might not be reading it. ;) So, here is a list of Things I Have Learned in the past few days.

1) Security precautions coming from Canada into the US are not nearly as strict as people thing. To wit, Julia and I were not even asked how long we were going to be staying in the country when we crossed into the US on Friday (with only one-way bus tickets, no less). And here I was all prepared to answer questions about illicit possession of citrus fruits!

2) The Flume Gorge in New Hampshire is very cool. If only we had thought to take our camera with us.

3) I have learned about the miracles of ulexite, which is the mineral used to produce fiberoptic cable, and which, when placed on any surface, causes the image to transfer through the rock onto its top surface.

4) Margaret Atwood is an elitist prig. After finishing reading The Handmaid's Tale, which I greatly enjoyed, there was this horrible interview transcript where she denied that the book was science fiction because "science fiction is full of Martians and spaceships". Hmph.

5) Movies: Moulin Rouge = not great, boring plot. Donnie Darko = very, very good. Belphegor, Phantom of the Louvre = horrifying agony.

6) I am eighteen years old. I wish.

Oh, and if anyone wants to get in touch with me over the next ten days, LJ entries are best, since I can't seem to access my sympatico e-mail.
