Welcome to the SMU LIT Hackathon 2022!

The SMU LIT Hackathon is an annual 3D2N hackathon organised by Singapore Management University's (SMU) Legal Innovation and Technology Club (LIT). This year it is taking place from 1-3 July 2022. The Hackathon will be conducted in a hybrid format, with the first 2 days held virtually and the 3rd day held physically at SMU Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium.

Teams from around Singapore will be tasked to utilise their technological and legal prowess to create innovative solutions to tackle their choice of problem statement.

We are partnering with renowned industry leaders who are looking for solutions to these real world problems. Participants will also get the opportunity to interact with esteemed industry leaders to get further inspiration and advice for their submissions.

We will be awarding over $10,000 worth of cash prizes, for multiple prize categories apart from just the top 3! All participants will also receive SMU LIT merchandise and event t-shirts!

Kindly note the rules for team creation are as follows:
1) Teams must have 6 members.
2) There must be at least 1 Law student within each team. For the avoidance of doubt, students majoring in Computing & Law are counted as Law students.
3) All participants must be from a Singaporean-based Institute of Higher Learning.
4) Each team need only sign up once. The person who signs up on behalf of the team will be known as the Team Leader, and will receive information about the Hackathon through their email.

The problem statements and a comprehensive rulebook will be emailed to registered teams 2 weeks prior to the start of the Hackathon. Registrations will close on 2 June 2022, 2359 hr. The release of finalised teams will be out on 13 June 2022.

There will also be online pre-hackathon workshops on 21 June 2022 and 23 June 2022.  We will be featuring legal-tech professionals, who will be imparting crucial skills in solving modern legal-tech problems through sharing sessions and hands-on activities.

In line with our progress into a new age of legal technology, the big theme for this year's Hackathon is "The Big Leap Forward". We have 3 sub-themes for you to choose from, with a Special Award to be won for the best submission for each theme. There will be specific problem statements for each theme released closer to the date of the Hackathon.

a) Access to Justice
While remote court hearings and legal clinics are becoming part of the norm, the fact remains that legal aid continues to be inaccessible for some. How can technology ensure that justice is accessible?

b) Data Privacy and Cybersecurity
As our lives become more digital and start shifting into the metaverse, more problems relating to data privacy and cybersecurity will arise. How can we best protect ourselves?

c) Efficiency of Work Processes
538 Singapore lawyers quit in 2021, a five-year high. One of the reasons cited were the long hours. How can technology improve work processes for the lawyer and firm?

Participants will be asked to select their themes by 24 June 2022, 2359 hr. Themes are available on a first-come-first-serve basis.
